Will always be 5 stars for the memories, Tai Pan will forever remind me of my daddy and GungGung. All my childhood birthday cakes were from here. I wish they would bring back full sized sheet cakes, I’m not sure you can even order them anymore. Their baos and pastries are all yummy, but my favorite is the chicken pies. Their napolean and Portuguese egg tarts are really yummy too. A true Chinatown staple.

A solid bakery in the heart of Chinatown. We picked up a few classic desserts, including the egg tart, which was excellent. I’d recommend sticking with the traditional version unless you’re familiar with other varieties—one we tried had a much stronger egg yolk flavor than expected. It wasn’t bad, just surprising when you’re expecting a sweeter dessert. Seating is limited, so it’s more of a grab-and-go spot. There’s usually a short line, and plenty of other treats to try on a future visit.

I spent $48 cash buying a strawberry cake on Sunday and 2 days later I found the fruits (strawberries and mangos) have gone moldy- the fruits both on the surface of the cake and inside the cake were already covered with mold. Poor quality of the food! Big concerns of food security and safety. Since they only accept cash, there’s no way to get the money back for this shit. Will file a formal complaint to the NY state department of health.

The baked pork buns were the highlight of our Chinatown for crawl! Also really enjoyed the egg custard tarts. We were a little confused how it worked and had to go through the line twice because we misunderstood, but basically you grab a tray and put any packaged bakery items you want on the tray—if you don't want any packaged items you take an empty tray. Then you put your tray on the counter and when one of the workers grabs your tray you raise your hand so they can help you get any items from behind the counter that you want. They'll then ring you up. It is cash only so plan accordingly. But it's super great and I'd highly recommend!

Tai Pan Bakery has one of the best egg tarts so far in the city! I love that they have both the flaky and cookie crust egg tarts along with the porteguese egg tart. The flaky crust is perfect, layers flake off as you bite into it and the filling is not too eggy and not too sweet. Their cookie crust egg tart has a satisfying soft snap as you bite into the oval end. I also love that it's oval shaped!! The only other bakery that I know of that does cookie crust oval shaped egg tarts is Saint Anna Bakery in Chicago!! Both egg tarts were a delightful snack! ☺️ The porteguese egg tart filling was super creamy and the richness of the caramelized "brûléed" top was the perfect contrast. Even the crust has slight caramelization on the inner edges. If you haven’t been, stop by Tai Pan Bakery for their egg tarts - it's a must! While you're there, try their other bakery items as well. There's the classic pineapple bun, cha siu bao (BBQ pork bun), and the ham+egg bun. Plenty of sponge cake desserts too if you have a sweet tooth!!
